Genuine Tonkin Bamboo Rod?
I just got a rod at an antique shop marked "genuine tonkin bamboo" and was wondering if it is worth anything. It is a a one piece split bamboo rod and has a long handle with a reel seat that looks chrome or nickle plated but brass underneath the plating. The handle also has also grooved above and below the reel seat and at at the base. The overall length is 112 inches (the handle takes up is 37 inches). The rod is also in excellent condition (no cracks, scratches, chips, or splitting) but does need a new eye. I just want to check if it is expensive before I use it.
this sounds like a saltwater boat rod. unless it is complete, with a full complement of agate guides and a nickle silver reel seat, it is worth little. shouldn't be any brass showing. finding an OE replacement guide may be difficult.
it probably hasn't been used for at least 60 years. even if it does look intact, the glue in the joints is likely to be brittle thus your rod splitting and possibly breaking during use.
save it for a wall hanger. find yourself a nice kovalovsky reel to put on it. or even an old ocean city reel.
boils down to... no, not expensive.

gonna throw in another couple cents worth...
reputable manufacturers of split bamboo fishing rods never had to rely on saying anything like "genuine tonkin bamboo". that was understood. but grades of bamboo vary. the very best cane does in fact come from the gulf of tonkin. so does a bunch of really crappy stuff.
you will never see an H. L. Leonard or a Hoagy Carmichael rod with a "genuine tonkin cane" label. mostly on cheap japanese imports back in the WWII era and cheap chinese stuff now. the very best split bamboo rods have always been made here. some other semi-passable ones like "montague" also.
